## About San Juan-Colorado basin

The San Juan drains the southern San Juan Mountains across Colorado, New Mexico and Utah, and is one of the two large tributaries that fill Lake Powell. This page lines up its two gages: Archuleta, immediately below Navajo Dam, and Farmington, about 40 river miles downstream and below the Animas confluence.

The pair separates the managed river from the natural one. Archuleta is a release schedule: a steady baseflow with one engineered spring peak timed for endangered-fish habitat. Farmington adds the Animas, which drains the mountains above Durango with no major storage on it, so the difference between the two lines is close to what the snowpack actually delivered this year. A spring in which Farmington rises sharply while Archuleta stays flat is a good snow year that Reclamation is choosing to store.
